Dear customers

For many decades Ferd. Wagner is renowned world wide, for being a reliable supplier of high-quality wire products and punched or coined parts with excellent surface qualities produced mainly for the optical industry but also for numerous additional applications in the most diversity.

Founded 159 years ago as a producer of raw materials for the jewellery industry, the company has always been adjusting successfully to the constant changes of the markets and has become over the years what it is today: a first class supplier of precision metal products.

In order to ensure the further continuing development of Ferd. Wagner, the owners Manfred Becker, Willi Gutekunst and Hans Locher have decided for reasons of age to hand over from 01 April 2008 the entrepreneurial responsibility to the company Zapp AG, Ratingen which will continue the activities of the company at its site in Pforzheim.

Zapp AG is a historic family owned company which has attained a world wide significance with the manufacture of raw materials in stainless steels and nickel-based alloys.

We strongly believe that Zapp AG gives Ferd. Wagner the opportunity to offer our customers further material-specific solutions to problems and to develop new ideas together.

We thank you very sincerely for the confidence you have been granting us for so many years and hope that you also will trust it to the new management.

Mr. Dieter Klimpke has been with the company for 30 years and now takes over the responsibility of the commercial director.

Please be assured that we will continue the tradition of Ferd. Wagner in being our customers’ competent partner in the common objective to transform your ideas into quality products.

Best regards

F E R D. W A G N E R GmbH

01/2008 Another two awards for the Design of the Zapp Group

The winners of the international Design Management Awards were announced at the end of November 2007, from among 243 submissions, in the Zeche Zollverein in Essen, Germany.

The Zapp Group was among the honourees in the ‘Large Enterprises’ category, joining the ranks of prize-winners Festo, BSH Bosch Siemens and Loewe. The DME Award is part of the EU Commission-sponsored ADMIRE project and recognises the strategic use of design in the respective companies (see also www.red-dot.de).

At the first weekend in advent the silver-award of the ‘DDC-Wettbewerb für gute Gestaltung’ in Frankfurt could be added. The award evaluates the design in different categories. The Corporate Design of the Zapp Group won in the category “Corporate” (see also www.ddc.de).

12/2007 We wish you all a peaceful Advent season.

2007 was an exciting year for us, as it was for all companies in industries like ours. There were rapid rises and falls in the prices for many key alloying elements, while the continual growth in consumer demand in Southeast Asia and the failure of many mortgage loans in the US brought uncertainties into globally networked markets. Let us make use of the Christmas and New Year season to gather strength for 2008.

10/2007 New Zapp logo now also visible from afar...

It doesn’t matter whether you are just coming in to land at Düsseldorf Airport or are driving to the Zapp headquarters in Ratingen: you can now see the new 3-D logo, which also glows in the dark, from a long way away. A large mobile crane was used to lift the 1.20 m high logo onto the roof, where it then simply needed to be mounted. Work that was well worthwhile, as the picture shows.

09/2007 Stamping Days | Pforzheim | September 2007

High Performance Stamping – with materials from Zapp. Experts from the stamping business will come together from 19 to 21 September in Pforzheim at the Stamping Days, which take place every year. Because of the precisely defined and focused topic, visitors to the trade fair Stamping Days™ are ones interested in getting a specific, fast and comprehensive overview of the businesses, as well as of the technologies and trends in the branch. Powder metallurgical steels are the specialty of the Tooling Aloys division of Robert Zapp Werkstofftechnik, whose experts can be met at stand C-20. We are looking forward to discuss the optimisation of your machine runing-times by using powder metallurgical steels. Even the profitability may move one step forward by using PM-Steels from Zapp. We hope to meet you in Pforzheim.

07/2007 Another step forward: New service center in Stratford, Connecticut / U.S.A.

The Zapp Precision Strip, East Coast Service Center offers our customers new logistical options, the fastest delivery times, innovative manufacturing workflows, and a wide variety of coil and spool sizes as well as edge finishes. And all of this under one roof.

That means we can work even more closely with our customers while building on our established strength.

Requests are handled quickly. You – our customer – can expect short delivery times measured in days not weeks.

Our working principle: Faster deliveries of better quality with fewer quality fluctuations.

05/2007 Corporate Design for the Zapp Group Garners Top Awards

This year, our advertising agency garnered two top international designer awards for their creation of the new corporate design for the Zapp Group.

Altogether, 24 international entries were nominated for this year‘s Corporate Design Prize, now in its 10th year, with our corporate design for the Zapp Group the finishing ahead of the field. In the category “B2B Products and Services Launch”, the 12-member jury lauded the corporate design for the Zapp Group as an “outstanding example of contemporary design and branding”.

The new, uniform corporate image now featured in brochures, data sheets and on the internet also won the European Design Award 2007. Charged with selecting the winners in the various award categories was a high-powered, independent jury comprising a dozen editors-in-chief from Europe’s leading design magazines. We are delighted to have been honored by these highly prestigious industry awards, which underscore that the new corporate image can successfully compete in the international arena.

03/2007 Decorative and functional precision strip from the Zapp Group

Any manufacturer offering innovative stainless steel surfaces such as Stahlwerk Ergste Westig is working in a highly challenging field. Even the tiniest scratches, minimal colour differences or almost unavoidable material faults can destroy what is otherwise a premium quality appearance. But for a company like Zapp, which envisages and defines its own role as that of “solution provider”, this is a challenge it is happy to take up.

Alongside refinement of surfaces by rolling, we have extended our processing capabilities to include surface treated and surface coated strip. With these three different methods of producing decorative strip surfaces, Zapp is able to open up enormous scope for exciting and innovative customer designs. With such descriptive designations as MirrorFinish, SatinFinish, HairlineFinish or YourDesign, these surface finishes have attracted plenty of attention from customers for the manufacture of top quality products such as mobile phones, light switches, digital cameras, and most recently also electric razors.

We look forward to talking to you about your surface finishes. Simply contact us on precisionstrip@zapp.com, to request our latest surface finish catalogue.

01/2007 Siegenia-Aubi’s supplier of the year 2006

Receiving the Quality Award for service-oriented work and flexibility from Siegenia-Aubi was the tangible evidence of all the hard work put in by the Service Center Unna of the Precision Strip Division of Stahlwerk Ergste Westig.

This was the leading manufacturer of special fittings’ way of saying thank you for the trusting and competent partnership between itself and Zapp. Siegenia-Aubi has been one of Zapp’s customers for around 30 years and sets high standards for its suppliers: development competence, flexibility, punctuality, modern data transmission and logistics methods combined with high quality material.

The Zapp Group will always see these demands as a challenge and incentive. In recognition of this professional, service-oriented approach and for the partnership provided during the development of the new hinges from our material, Siegenia-Aubi named the Zapp Group - and in particular the Service Center Unna – Supplier of the Year.

10/2006 Euroblech and Stainless Steel World - the exhibition year draws to a close

After Wire in Düsseldorf and Achema in Frankfurt, three further trade exhibitions now bring an exciting exhibition year to an end.

Robert Zapp Werkstofftechnik (Materials Engineering) will exhibit at Euroblech in Hanover from 24 to 28 October. This leading international exhibition is the starting point for all those who manufacture, process or deal in sheet metals. The meeting point is the Tooling Alloys area on Stand B52 in Hall 13. For five days, everything associated with powder-metallurgical high performance steels will be on show on a newly designed exhibition stand.

The concluding event of the exhibition year is the Stainless Steel World Conference & Expo which takes place from 14 to 16 November in Houston, Texas. The conference and exhibition are aimed at all those seeking solutions to problems relating to exacting applications in the field of corrosion resistant materials. The personnel of Zapp Precision Wire, Inc. are looking forward to some interesting meetings with visitors and wide ranging discussions.

The international suppliers' exhibition Elmia Subcontractor will take place in Jonköping, Sweden, at the same time. Here, you will be able to meet one of the longstanding agents for the Zapp Group on Stand DO2.42 with BBS i Halmstad. Detailed information on the products of the Stahlwerk Ergste Westig and Zapp Medical Alloys will be obtainable here from 14 to 17 November.

08/2006 Improving the quality of life with Ergste Westig Quality

One of our customers, Italian electrical components manufacturer, has been awarded a leading design prize for its switch and socket series. The award ceremony took place at the “Light & Building” at the end of April in Frankfurt.

One of the factors underpinning the success of the EIKON series was the contribution made by Ergste Westig Precision Strip to the sophisticated look of the product. No fewer than 185 entries were nominated for the “Design Plus” this year. This is a prize with a tradition stretching back 20 years, and has gained a place as one of the most highly sought-after accolades in this sector throughout Germany. Only products of outstanding innovation and design for everyday use are considered for an award. The expectations placed on the entries for this year’s prize reflected these high standards.

Good looks alone were not enough to capture the prized award. Aspects such as the application of new technologies and use of high-grade appealing materials were assigned an equally important role. To anyone with a specialist’s eye and also to the responsible technical project manager, it came as no surprise that the judges finally decided on the variant with the new innovative surfaces rolled by Zapp Precision Strip.

06/2006 Zapp Group presents united face with new joint logo

“Building a brighter future on the foundation of tradition”

(ENGELBERTH ZAPP SEN. 1730)

All the companies belonging to the Zapp Group will be setting up their stall in the future under one logo, presenting a clearly structured, matter-of-fact and contemporary new face to the public. The message underlying the new design speaks of a fresh new approach to meet the challenges of the 21st Century without abandoning the traditional values and experience gathered over a history stretching back 300 years.

Our customers and suppliers were not always clearly aware that they were dealing with a company group which in combination offers a unique concentration of expertise in all matters relating to stainless steel, specialty materials and tooling alloys. The standardized design is intended to convey this common bond with greater clarity in the future.

By implementing new structures, Zapp aims to demonstrate its ability to respond to the needs of its international and German customers more rapidly, efficiently, and competently in the future. The terms “flat” and “long” in popular use among only German specialist circles will be replaced by the internationally accepted designations “Precision strip” and “Precision wire”. The technical services have been largely assigned to the “Precision Strip” and “Precision Wire” divisions.

Customers with contacts in the specialty materials or tool alloys commercial divisions at Robert Zapp Werkstofftechnik will continue to benefit from access to this sound fund of expertise. These divisions will continue to offer advice on choosing the right specialty material or the right tool alloy in the future under the new name “Zapp Materials Engineering”.

Our American locations have been trading since the beginning of the New Year under the names Zapp Precision Wire Inc. and Zapp Precision Strip Inc. The name itself provides sufficient indication of what customers will be able to procure from the two corporations.

The individual steps undertaken as part of this restructuring program are intended to bring the members of the Zapp Group of Companies closer together and to help optimize the marketing of its products.

05/2006 New-look trade fair presentation - Wire 2006 in Düsseldorf

Despite deadline pressures, hectic bustle and the jostling crowds, people kept on stopping in front of the Zapp Group stand at this year’s show. Simply to get a good look at the stand. Benefiting from a brand new exhibition concept, the Zapp presentation made a refreshingly new and striking impact. The clarity of styling making use of modern structures and the innovative presentation proved one of the focal attractions at the world’s most important wire and wire manufacturing trade fair.

Boasting sculpture-like stainless steel figures made of wire, rod and profile material, a new trade fair film clip and the trade fair office wrapped around by precision stainless steel strip, Stahlwerk Ergste Westig exhibiting on behalf of the Zapp Group caused something of a stir and attracted a lively and enthusiastic response from fair-goers.

This enthusiasm was naturally reflected in the visitor numbers. Over the five days of the show, around a thousand visitors called in at the stand. Kept busy by many interesting discussions with interested visitors, high levels of concentration were required from all the trade fair staff. Particularly gratifying was the high proportion of new potential buyers among the familiar faces of existing customers at the stand. By attracting new business, the company succeeded in achieving its main aim at the WIRE & TUBE 2006.

Overall, there were 1993 exhibitors from 50 different countries represented at the WIRE & TUBE 1993. Around 65,000 trade visitors made the journey to the show in order to catch up on new trends and technologies, representing a 4,000 increase over the figure for 2004. Visitors traveled from 71 countries, the majority of them from Germany, Italy, France, Holland, Belgium, the USA and Asia, here predominantly from China and India.
